Re: used motor

Those engines are easiest ran in a barrel ay one time tempo built a engine flush device for them but it was prone to falling of and damaging the water pump. It sounds like the telltale has dirt in it use a piece of wire while running and rod it out.

Re: used motor

Yup, hopefully just a piece of dirt in the pisser.
But, that puppy has a little age on it. If you don't know the history or if it has been sitting awhile, plan to replace the impeller. It is possible that the impeller was brittle from age and disintegrated. Would would notice some chunky bits of rubber (could be whitish) blowing out the exhaust if this were the case. Check the bottom of the barrel.
You should be able to use muffs on that one. Below the cavitation plate should be some holes.

Re: used motor

Under the rear of the cowl off to one side where the water pisses out, there should be a rubber grommet. This is where to stick the wire.

The water will all drain out the exhaust, so this should not be an issue.

Before you buy the impeller, take it apart first. There are at least three different kits. They are all the same parts, just more parts in different kits. e.g. There is a SS cup that the impeller rides in, if it's scored, you'll need to replace that too.
Personally, if it were mine, I'd spring for the full kit ($50) which has everything - gaskets, seals, housing, etc. This way, you know what you have and may save a second trip to the store.
