I have been comparing prices on ebay and craigslist to those found in NADA guides and NADA prices seem to be a third of what most people are asking any comments or thoughts...........

Also can anyone say where to get original price's on older (70's & 80's) outboards even if the are manafactures suggested retail prices...???

Re: Used Outboard Prices

Used outboard prices vary widely. Location is quite an important issue in what price they sell for.

The NADA prices for outboards, however, don't come close to matching reality in most places. The best guide, I think, is to monitor Craig's list for a while, paying attention to the prices and to how quickly an outboard sells. Some folks ask way too much for their motors, and the ads keep getting re-posted. eBay completed auction prices are usually lower than local prices, since shipping is often in play.

There's a guy here in the Twin Cities who is asking $350 for a Ted Williams 3hp outboard. It's one of the later Tanaka ones. Now, if a guy thought that was what the outboard was worth, he'd be wrong, since he just keeps running that ad, with no takers. Same for the guy with the 50s 35 hp Johnson for $800. Those prices are just plain wrong.

However, the guy selling a Ted Williams for $125 and the guy selling the 35hp for $300 are selling theirs quickly, so it represents the price more closely. Later model and larger hp outboards also show a big range between asking and selling prices.

there are certain motors in far more demand than others. the big motors right now are down on sales price. some of the smaller ones are up. the J/E 9.9 is always in demand. imho, Nada, is worthless for boats or motors over 5 years old.

in my area it will also depend on the time of year. Right now duck hunters and fisherman are all over the small motors. In the late spring the big motors for skiing and tubing will sell better.
