We (my wife and I) are looking at buying our first boat. I have been boating since I was little so I do have limited experience in and around boats but have never owned one. I have been reading the forums here for several months researching and collecting information. I have decided used is definitely the way to go for us.

We are looking at 20'-24' ski boat with a 5.0 or 5.7 V8. We do a lot of skiing including slalom and double skiiing so I want to make sure we have plenty of power for pulling people up. The boat will be used a lot on a 400 acre private lake as well as larger lakes like Lake Table Rock in Missouri a few times a year. A trip up and down the Mississippi river will a few other boating friends could be in the future as well.

I came a across a used 2003 Regal 1800 LSR with a 4.3 Volvo Penta. What do you guys think of these? It is a little smaller than I had in mind but I have read the Fastracs on the Regals are very efficient. Do you guys think this boat would fit our needs or should we find something a bit larger with a V8?

Re: Used Regal 1800 LSR

welcome to i boats......

i would think the 4.3 on an 18 would be great for skiing.....i would think the only thing to do would be to see if it can pull two out of the water at one time..........even tho im sure you would love a 5.7 a 4.3 in an 18 is good.....

and the volvo drive is a dream

It depends on how many people you would like to take on the boat.

I have a 17.5 Glastron and while it will hold 8, 6 is about it's comfortable limit. I have the 4.3 VP and I have no complaints about power. I have a 19 pitch prop on it for better pull but it will top out over 50 with the stock prop.

6 people total would usually be the most we would need to haul.

Would say a 18 footer with the 4.3 would be about like 22 footer with the 5.0? Powerwise that is.

I have an '01 1800 LSR with the 3.0l it will get one skier up no problems but will probably strugle with two however, with the 4.3l you should have no issues pulling two skiers/tubes. One thing you mentioned is that you will normally have 6 on board. That will likley be a bit much for that boat. I feel a cramped with more than 4 or 5 people on board. Let me know if you have any other spicific questions.

Thanks AJ. I starting to wonder if we would be better off with something a bit larger.
