Used Trolling Motor (what to look for?)

I saw a 35 lb thrust trolling Motor in our local paper for $40. --- I know the price is good, but I really don't know what to look for to determine if it's any good. Does anyone have any simple rules on what to look for? (besides the obvious checks on condition, looking at the prop and possibly bringing my battery with me to make sure it works). I'm familiar with Minn Kota and Motorguide brand names and that's about it. Thanks!

Bought all you can do is hook it up to a battery and make sure it works. If it has forward, neutral and reverse, make sure they all work. Listen to it run and make sure it has no strange noises(Rattling)in the lower unit, that may indicate a bearing going out. Wiggle the prop side to side and check for to much play in the bearing. Switch the forward/reverse lever back and forth a few times to make sure it shifts as it should. If the prop is bad, they can be had for almost any brand motor for little. Most trolling motors have a long lifespan...
