using a lift assist shock from a heavier motor?

I was going to convert my 87 60hp to a power tilt/trim. Then I saw a homemade lever on a 70 hp very similar to the Garelick version that I really like better, just flip up an arm and then you have leverage to tilt the motor up from inside the boat.

Problem on my boat is the gas shock is worn out, almost no assist. New one from BRP is $300. This morning I was offered a "Nearly new" shock from an 88hp for $50. There is about a 40-50 lb weight difference. Any chance that this shock might work?

I'd just get the Garelick one. Have used them before and they work good.

Are those cylinders for lift assist or are they for damping in the case of impact? On the older models like mine, the cylinder was only meant to dampen the movement, not assist. The reason for this is that if you hit an underwater obstruction and the motor comes up (as it's supposed to), the cylinder will dampen the motor travel so that it doesn't slam upward with so much force.

Perhaps models that are newer than mine have a cylinder designed for lift assist. I'd be happy to learn if this is true. If not, then there is no need to purchase new-to-you cylinders to aid in lifting.

On the later motors (mid70's+)the shock has an air spring to provide some lift. My old 1980 70hp wasn't that hard to lift maybe a 50# effort. This motor is probably a 75-80# effort
