I was just about to swap out my cast iron intake manifold for a Edelbrock Performer, I was told that this is not the best idea and that the intake gaskets will develope a leak at the water passages to the cylinder head, I boat fresh water only, anybody know if this is a true statement..I'd be doing this swap to a 350 magnum mercruiser.

In fresh water it should not be any different than running it in an automotive applicaiton. Folks here have installed them in salt water as well with good results.

I had an Edelbrock on a 351 Cleveland 4V for years with no problem at all. The boat was in salt water a few times too.

I've got a performer with holley projection 2d on top of it and I haven't had a problem with it at all.

Re: Using aluminum Intake

If your worried about the water passage you can buy an epoxy kit that coats the inside of the water passage of the intake manifold. Make sure you use black felpro marine intake gaskets (black gaskets)are for Alu. intakes.

Re: Using aluminum Intake

Thanks guy's I'm going with the performer intake, I'v also got the performer carb to go on top it the marine one of course.. The guy that was advising me not to use the intake at the same time was trying to sell me a Cast Iron one he had sitting around ..I only went in to buy a Flame arrester...you see My boat has a 350magnum in it, not the original motor, anyway somehow it ended up with the intake and 2bbl mercarb from the orginal 305, the boat was sold to me from a dealer stating it was a 305, last year I yanked off the exhaust manifolds and installed a thru hull exhaust system it was at this time I discovered the block and heads were 5.7l, when I verified the serial number it came up has a 1993 or 1994 350 magnum carburated.

Bondo, are you coating the water passages with anything like Glyptol or epoxy? I'll be using a E Performer on my 331.

Re: Using aluminum Intake

Hey Bondo and I are almost neighbours.. I'm always nice to my neighbours, even if I don't like'em, and don't worry Lube you also give good advise to, anyway I got done installing the Edelbrock Performer intake and carb, turned the key and fired right away.....I'm totally pleased with the performance, throttle response is instant and low end torque is is excellent, I would just like to give a few tips for anyone that may not already know. If you are thinking of upgraded your Merc small block to a Edelbrock performer Carb, you can get the fuel line from pump to carb from Merc, you just need to order for a Weber carb'd Merc 5.7 litre Alpha, fits perfect and looks real clean, you may also have to get a elbow fitting also for fuel pump, you may also have to change your throttle cable bracket,I did because I went from 2bbl to 4bbl, if so then you will also need to get the Throttle cable stud and lock nuts also, the only throttle cable bracket available from merc now is stamped steel and appears to be somewhat universal fit, I also ordered the carb studs and lock nuts also From Merc with this said the job was smooth a quick, took me about 3 hours and no hassle's trying to make parts fit, I thank all that replied to my post. Oh ya gas was about $4.50cdn a gallon today for 92 octane ,good time for this upgrade
