Using an Automotive Thermostat in a Boat???

My family is dying to get out on the water tomorrow and all of the marine shops in the area are closed. Is there any harm in using an automotive thermostat (same temp value) for a day. This will also help troubleshoot an overheating problem. If the problem is fixed, I would plan to buy a marine thermostat next week.

Thoughts? Is this a stupid idea? I would think that a thermostat is a thermostat, but you all are the experts. I am the newbie.

If it'll fit, and same temp, yes. Take the old one with you to make sure, and you may have to make your own gasket.

Like coors said, go for it. Just don't forget it's in there. An auto thermostat will rust out quickly in a raw water cooling system.

Where are you Shopping for that Automotive T-stat,..??..??....

I Know that NAPA carries a Full Line of Marine T-stats.......
