using an omc tach on mercury?

got an excellent buy on an omc tach at garage sale.... but how can I hook it up to my mercury.......which wires to what?......have 80's merc 80hp..... 4 cyl....... tach supposed to have come off 86 omc V-4

On the OMC tach you may have 4 connections<br />1 for ground( to engine ground not boat ground) 1 for sender/ sensor, 1 for power 12 volts 9 from engine) 1 for light. Merc should have wires in harness for this , except for light. <br />Gray wire for sender,purple for 12 volt power,<br />black for ground. Tach should have slot for small screw driver to adjust for stator pulses. May work may not depends on ignition system om Merc, did not give year of motor,

the motor is a 1981 model......80 hp merc. for the 5 bucks I got it for figure it will make an interesting shelf item if nothing else....lol.....
