Using Boston's Waterways

I've lived just outside of Boston my whole life, but my boat has never seen any water other than a small lake in New Hampshire. It's a small 16-footer.

What would I have to do to put it in the water in Boston? Do I have to register the boat in both states? Where would I do that?

Also how do locks work? I know *HOW* they work but I mean, from the boater's point of view, hows that work?

Is there anything else I should know before trying this?
I know my little boat isn't' very ocean worthy, I probably wouldn't' go very far out into the harbor. I'd mostly stick around the Mystic & Charles rivers.

Also I have driven other small craft in busy waterways before, down on the cape and down in Ft Lauderdale. Just not my boat. And also not through locks.

Oh and is there anyplace I can launch from, and park the truck for the day, ideally free?

Also for what it's worth, my boat does not have any kind of radio.

BUY A RADIO TODAY! A floating hand held is nice if you are in the water and need to call for help. A PLB would be a good idea, too.
