My old fiberglass bass boat is dull but the paint is still good, just super hazed and bleached from the sun. I was thinking about using some Duplicolor Clear in a spray paint can that I used to clear my smoked out tail lights on my truck...they have been going strong for almost 3 years now with no chipping..

The paint def shows more sparkle when it's wet so i was hoping that maybe somebody here has tried to use spray can clear on their boats...mind you this is only a 16' 1989 Ebbtide fishing boat that I don't need to look perfect just less embarrassing.

I feel like if I prep it good and spray it with a few cans of this stuff (I no longer have my gravity guns or even a large enough compressor, got lost in a storage unit a few years back) it will at least shine up for a couple years...anybody think it won't even last that long?

I would think that wet sanding and buffing out your boat would be a better idea than using the clear paint.

It's been buffed to the point you can feel the metallic in the paint. Im afraid if I buff anymore the paint might start to burn in places.

I'm just mainly wondering if it will hold up to the flexing of a fiberglass bass boat enough to not chip off in large pieces.

I'm confused! If you can feel the metallic then the paint is not still good. I think you have more issues than just oxidation and fading. You really need to post pics if you want us to be able to help you with qualified answers.

I got the boat from my uncle whom told me he has buffed it a lot of different times..the paint feels really rough, almost like sandpaper...the paint is faded looking but I assumed hitting it with some clear would restore shine and make it look better since getting the boat wet makes it look a little better...I realize I can't shine it up like new, I just don't want to spray paint the whole boat down and then have it look worse than it does now in 6 months.

These pictures were from last fall so it has gotten a little worse since sitting in direct Texas sun.

Only pictures I have right now since at work, these probably don't help much but I will take some closer ones this afternoon.

Spray can Clear is for "tests" IMHO .. not for full clear coats.

YD.

PS. You really need to get rid of that High Yellow as Most of us can not see your last line in your Sig :)

I read a forum thread somewhere today on this subject--how to replace the clear coat. I believe it was somewhere on this forum. With the proper product and a good spray gun, numerous coats of clear can replace the gel coat on the deck--something an individual can shoot in his garage.

The gentleman said his wife got tired of smelling the stuff cure through the walls. But she was very satisfied with the professional job he did.

I suggest you research the subject a little further on the internet--for more info.
