Using livewells

Just purchased a used Javelin bass boat with front and rear livewells. The inlets on the transom are plugged (as would be the bilge). There is a shut-off valve control.

I assume I must remove the plugs for use of the livewells? How can I confirm the shut-off valve is operating before my maiden voyage?

I don't know why they have plugs in the inlets as they shouldn't need them unless they are not to be used at all. There should be screens on the inlets and if not,it is important to get them to prevent clogging your system.
To test the shut-off valve, close it and using a hose put a few inches of water in the well.If it holds the valve is working in the closed position. Then open the valve and the well should drain.

Another thought.Keep an eye open for any leaks in the system in case they were plugged due to a leak in the plumbing somewhere.(doubt it but you never know). To check,I would suggest putting the plugs in before you open the valves to drain the wells to check the inlet plumbing. If no water shows up in the bilge then you can pull the plugs and all should be ok.

OK. There are screens and I see those as inlets. The plugs are on the outlets.

Should I remove the plugs?

There should be no plugs on the outlets(overflows).Where are the outlets located?

The outlets are on the transom and the shut-off valves are just before the outlets. There are separate overflows on each tank.

Your set-up is different than mine but all that has been said should be ok.It sounds like you have a pump on each inlet going to the top aerator,an overflow line and a separate drain line with the shut-off valve.Just curious,is that correct and does the drain line tee into the inlet line anywhere?

I'm not near the boat and I'm relying on the manual for my info. It appears that they are not connnected in any way. There are two inlets, two pumps, two overflows, and two outlets.

I'll test things out over the coming weeks and report back.
