Mine came with metal backing plates, still should add some plywood or something between the hull and the plate. I didn't and I'm getting some spiderwebbing near the mounts.

You should use plywood between the plates and the bigger the plywood is the better.

What about aluminum plates? we have some scrap pieces at work 1/8 and 1/4 thick.

The ones that came with my tower were 2.75" round and 1/4" thick. I also added some 1/2" plywood on the inside of the hull when I installed my tower.
