My 1986 evinrude 70hp vro(not used anymore) gets barely 1-3 mpg, is this normal? it runs very good, and is on a 1985-1987 thundercraft 16 ft; deep v-hull. the boat is pretty light, i only carry 6 gallons of gas and 1-2 people with me. it has been this way since we got it 2 years ago, i cannot afford to put $80 of gas in it a week, please help.

boat are measured in gallons per hour, you 70 will burn in the range of 7 gallons per hour at Wide Open Throttle.

Welcome to "Boating". A boat is a hole in the water into which you pour money. Your numbers are a little off. Your engine will burn about 7 gallons/hour at WOT. Assuming your boat does about 45 MPH that means in an hour you travel about 45 miles and consume 7 gallons of fuel. 45/7=5.7 MPG. Unless you get distance by GPS and have a fuel flow meter or measure fuel use accurately, MPG calculations can be way off.

Agree. MPG is without doubt not the way to measure fuel consumption of a boat.
