Hello. I am new to boating and have some questions about a boat I purchased that I hope someone can help me with. The boat is a 92 Bayliner 1800 Capri That I'm going to have to do some work on. The stringers are shot and probably the transom as well. I've done some fiberglass work in the past and figure with some sweat and time I can make it nice again. My question is with the motor on the boat. I looked up the serial number it comes up a 81-82 Mercury, but looks like it could be a 150 or a 200 and the motor itself has v200 on the rear, but each half of the cowl says 150. Can anyone here tell which it is by the numbers on the heads and carbs? serial number at transom is 5806046, heads 1026-7261, 3 carbs 557 555, the block is marked 858 7790

Looking at some of the serial number ranges (and I am no expert) you could have a 150, 175, or 200.
I see that there is not a 175 in 1982 so I getting the exact date of mfg would be helpful. But I am sure some more experienced guys on here can help more. Welcome to iboats.

Pull a main jet, give me the number and I will tell you what motor you have.

I'd imagine that wire (purple) is for the tach?

Re: V-200 or V-150

It looks like the mid is from a 200 and if it's all original then the rest should follow suit. It the boat is only rated for a 150 then that could explain the cowlings since pretty much one size fits all when it comes to those. What is odd is that it appears to need a whale tale to get it up on plane. If that was truly a 200hp motor you wouldn't need it on that small of a boat. Perhaps it's just a tired motor. If you can pull the air baffle off it and look a little closer at the carbs their should be a number WH-? something on them. If we can match that up with the jet we can get your a little closer guess. The carbs do look like original WH's.

It definitely doesn't need the tail on it. The boat practically jumps out of the water and lands on plane. I think the guy I bought it from was trying to get a bigger wake from it for wakeboarding.
I edited the above post with the wh numbers.

WH-3 is a 200 carb, easy way to tell is look on the head, it will be stamped either 3 1/8 or 3 3/8. If 3 3/8 its a 200, if 3 1/8 its a 150 or 175. All the mids are the same as the only difference is the adapter plate....
