Could anyone tell be the proper lube for the V-Drive?

Also I think the cooling system may be "hosed"
Water is sucked in thru the seacock, thru the seastrainer, thru the V-Drive, then thru the tranny cooler, and then to the suction side of the seawater pump.
The discharge goes to the thermostat housing and out thru the exhaust manifolds.
Seems like the pump should be pushing the water and not sucking it so far.
The seawater pump manufacturers all say the same thing. That the suction of the pump should come directly from the sea strainer and the distance should be as short as possible.
I'm about the third owner and don't know if my set up is correct or not since I discovered that the strainer was installed backwards, and the sea **** mounting flange was about 1 1/2" above the keel. (Thru hull was not cut too proper length)
TIA, Dave
