Has anyone experienced a tach that has a mind of its own ???
These issues are completely random, and most of the time the tach works just fine.
1. Tach will need zero, hit the trim up or down and the tach bounces to 5K then back to zero when the trim is released.
2. Tach will read fine up to 3-4k, when I go to WOT the tach goes to zero.

I replaced all the tach, stater parts and the voltage reg thinking... Nothing changed

Since the PTT and tach have only power and ground in common, I would suspect the wiring going to the tach. When you hit the trim button, you either rob the tach of power or of ground.

I checked all my connections. I ran it today out of the water, I noticed that the tach reads fine for the first 5 or so mins. then started to read about 800 RPM lower. If I shut down the engine and restart I got another min or so of correct readings then it went 800 RPM lower again.... Is this that Volt Reg shedding off voltage when the battery is fully charged?

What year is that motor? The early 80s motors only had rectifiers, not voltage regulators.

Anyway, your problem sounds heat related. Is the motor overheating?

Older 16 amp system, converted to a volt reg. I think I have a bad reg. Voltage is low to the tach but battery is charging. It has a cheap reg now.... I'm goin to have to buy a CDI or something better

rectifier only, no regulator is a 9 amp system (if original) .. 16's had both reg and rectifier.. take tha regulator off and run it.. won't hurt a thing if you're battery program is up ta snuff... most 16's will barely keep up with todays 'lectronics plus tilt m trim motors, pumps and etc...
tach gets its signal from stator @ rectifier..

sounds more like ya dropping a cly…. 800 would be 'bout normal.

that info was for Chris.. you already stated it had a reg that you replaced.. like I said, reg on those years 16's are really unnecessary and have no bearing on tach.. is tha tach actin' stupid or jus losin' 800 rpm at times?
