My V200 is acting as if it has too much fuel. Cleaned carbs and adjusted floats twice. After you take off the first time in the day it doesn't want to take off again and wants to die when you stop. If you get it going it runs fines. Any thoughts? I just bought it rebuilt last year and never have got it right.

docd9501-
We all want to help you here and the experts here are the best. If you give more info on your engine (year, serial #) and some more specifics it will be easier and you will probably find that you will get more responses.

Why did you clean and adjust the floats in the first place? If you just had it rebuilt this should have been done.

What do you mean by "If you get it going it runs fine". Cause you also say " After you take off the first time in the day it....", I would consider this getting it going.

Do you know what caused the first engine failure? What was done as part of the overhaul?

Keep posting and Good luck

Re: V200 Loading up/stalling

I bought the powerhead complete. Carbs powerpacks, everything. The guy I bought it from sent it in to Merc. He had all the paper work. Well before it was done he found a newer complete motor and put it on his boat. Anyhow the powerhead had sat for a year or so before I bought it. So I wanted to clean out the carbs before I mounted her up. She is a 89 V 200. When you first get to the lake it starts and runs fine on the first initial run. Then when you stop and idle it acts as if it is flooding. Same when you restart it and take off again. It just acts like it wont go. If you rev the heck out of it and put it in gear and gun her she will usually go. I had all the left over parts from my old powwer head so I started doing some elimination. Checked power packs carbs coils and regulator. I am just stumped. My old one died of pre ignition. Timing screw vibrated loose and killed her. I just dont want another 200 hp melt down if ya know what I mean. I dont have the Serial # because my old head was a xr4 150. And I have lost the paper with the # on it. Thanks Andy.

Re: V200 Loading up/stalling

It sounds like you have a possible fuel problem, bad fuel, fuel pump,(anti-siphon valve, if you have one installed). Have you tried running on a different fuel tank? Different fuel hose?
Maybe improperly routed or restricted bleed hose(s). Reed block housing loose or bad gasket?

Re: V200 Loading up/stalling

Check everything gss036 mentioned. I agree that it sounds like a fuel related problem but...

Start with some basics first so nothing is lingering in the back of our minds. Check the compression (on a warm engine) and check for spark all on six. Check for spark on all six when its having its problem.

If you don't see fuel leaking from the carbs, you float levels are fine. It's hard to flood these things so I doubt this is the case. After you slow down to idle from WOT how does the engine act? Does it spit and sputter? How bad is the idle?

Keep posting

pump the ball and look down the throat of carb and see if gas is pumping trough the needle and seat it dosent have to be running if it is just replace them, take apart fuel pump replace all diaphrams if it sat for awhile they are probably no good replace it with a kit, look at the plugs are they washed with gas

Re: V200 Loading up/stalling

Thanks so far. I have spark checked it and compretion tested it also. All that is good. The floats are fine not leaking. As for remote fuel I have not tried that. It idles fine. Although after you run it a while it starts to sputter and die. I replaced the fuel filter but not the pump. I guess I should giver a try. Someone asked me once before if the exhaust holes were above or below water. What is the effect of them being below or above water? When you shut her down they kindda teeter totter in and out of the water. Do I need to jacker up?

I have read somewhere that having the exhaust below the water line will cause problems similar to what you are having. The cavitation plate should be level with the bottom of the boat in most cases. Try trimming the motor up a ways then run some tests to see if that makes a difference. Maybe even shift some weight to the bow of the boat.

But, have you checked spark when it starts acting up. Sometimes a weak switchbox can act up when it heated up.
