First off what a great forum, its so great ive never had to post up a question, the search function always did wonders. Ive got a pair of motors, model j100temxh (86' commercial for what i have researced). Well i started doing lots of maintance stuff, replacing fuel lines, fixing water in cylinders, checking timing. I have a clymer and seloc manual, cant find an oem for the commercial motor. Using joe's method tested first motor and came up with full advance at 24 deg.(with the 4 deg added) Went to second motor and thats when i discoverd the problem, there was not even enough spark for the timing light to pick it up. Through testing i found both starboard cylinders have a weak spark. Switched coil, powerpacks no change. Testing ohms of the charge coil using clymer method shows ohms low out of spec on the starboard side plug, but the port side is within spec. Manual states if ohms out of range replace stator. My questions
1. Is it posssible for a stator to be bad, and only affect one side, or do i need to start looking elsewhere. (timer base) I want to know for sure before i drop the coin for a stator or timer base.
2. What should the full advance timing be, my manual dont have the SPECIFICS of my motor. Thanks for any input

That's an unusual model # you have. If it's an 86 commercial, the stator may be bad. On those engines with two packs, each is driven by a separate coil in the stator. In addition to the ohms test, there is a specific output voltage required. If both coils don't putout 150 volts each minimum, (as measured with a special "peak-reading" voltmer) the low leg/side can cause that pack to misfire or not fire at all. I'd get a factory manual to insure you do these component electrical tests per the manual-see Ken Cook in Milwaukee for an original. The Commercial engines are sometimes different from the consumer versions, as yours are designed to run on 67 octane-perhaps for overseas applications. The factory timing should be on a decal on the airbox cover. The manual says 28 degrees plus or minus one.

Do to the fact i know some of these motors are designed to run on low octane fuel, thats why I am uncertain if the timing is also different on the commercial motors? Unfortunately I have no timing stickers still on the motors. I hate to advance and blow a piston. Do they just run low compression head gaskets to accomodate for low octane fuel?Id love to be able get a factory manual, but already talked to ken cook before i bought clymers and seloc, and they dont have a manual for my motors. I dont want to buy one for a startard model and too many things be different, and have another half-a@@ manual sitting around.

You could always try the Bombardier consumer hotline: 1-847-689-7090

Called brp, the guy was very helpful and knowledgeable to my surprise and was able to reference me to a manual for a different model that should be very close to what i have. Thanks much hducker
