got the bearing carrier and huge mofo snap rings and first gearset out, but not the DRIVEshaft. the PROPshaft is still not coming out... it's not siezed, it's all nice and loose and wobbly with no bearing support, but it only pulls out about a quarter inch before it is stopped by something solid. do i need to remove the DRIVE shaft, too? i'm not above doing it... i've done it before, but this is the first time i've wanted/needed to remove the PROPshaft and not the DRIVEshaft.

so again, do i need to remove the DRIVEshaft to get the PROPshaft out?

1978 v4 crossflow.

thanks,
peter

you need to remove the drive shaft and shift shaft.

AND push the shift lever down before removing it, the shifter needs to be down to allow clearance for removal.

Re: v4 Xflow removing PROP shaft

Removing drive shaft sometimes needs a trick.
Loosen the pinion nut, but leave it on at least 2 threads.
Loosen the upper bearing housing under the waterpump, remove the 4 screws.
Shift into neutral so the clutch dog is just under the pinion nut.
Put a big flat screwdriver, or similar, between the nut and dog.
Give the prop shaft a short 'knock' upwards, and normally the pinion comes loose.
Remove pinion nut, pinion and lift up driveshaft.
Press down shift rod and un-screw.
(before unscrewing, screw it all the way down and count the rotations. When re-installing, get it back in same position!!!!!)
Pull out the prop shaft with shift housing etc.
When re-installing, always use a new nut on the pinion.
