V6 drawing lots of juice, flywheel creeps when battery switch turned on

After I overheated my 1985 Evinrude 175 V6 carburated it now draws 12 volts the moment I turn the battery switch on, a lot of juice that will quickly draw down a fairly new big deep cycle battery. Telltale sign when I turn the battery switch on, the flywheel turns all by itself, no starter involved, the flywheel will turn anywhere from a 1/2 inch to an inch when the battery switch is turned on and off. Anyone know what my problem might be?

Regulator and maby more. Check the stator , replace the regulator.

the only thing that will turn the motor is the starter. check all connection and the ignition switch.

90% of starter problems are bad connections. remove and clean both ends of the battery cables, so that they are shiney, also the cable from the solenoid to starter. check for nicks in the cables. and make sure the connectors are on the wire good. the cable tend to corrode from the inside out, if nicked, corroded wires, and connections, heat up and cause resistance to the follow of electricity, thus the starter doesn't get enough. you can also take jumper cable pos battery post to large post on starter. with a good connection, the engine should spin. then if the starter is good clean everything and retest. then trouble shoot solenoid. starters can be rebuit at a starter/alternator shop, much cheaper than a new one.

also have the battery load tested at the auto parts store, free, i've had new batteries go bad

I reckon it will be the rectifier rather than the regulator but since they are both part of the same thing it is academic really.

Either disconnect and insulate the wires between between the stator and the rectifier/regulator or the battery connection to it. See if that stops the symptoms. If it does it more or less proves it.

Reckon the fact that is does turn the flywheel as opposed to just getting hot suggests that the stator coil may be OK but you have probably cooked it.

You are getting 12v flow from battery through the stator coils which will make the stator/flywheel behave like a motor rather than a generator. Flywheel will move till the magnets line up with the coils then stop. My guess is that the issue is shorted (failed ) diode(s) in the rectifier.

I suppose this will quickly damage the stator coils also.
