At the switch Boxes, what does the Black and Yellow Wire do?

Is it supposed to get power from the switch and power the switch boxes, or is it supposed to ground the switch boxes/stator at the switch in the off possition.

My switch I'm trying to wire in has 6 Posts,

AM
B
M
I
S
C

The AM is Ground I think.

The B is Battery, got that part.

The I stands for Ignition Circuit.

The S is for the starter solenoid, got that part she cranks all day.

The M is for the Magneto Circuit.

The harness I'm trying to wire in has these wires
Black
Red
Red/Yellow
Yellow/Black
Black/Yellow
There is also a purple, but it stops at the engine plug.

The other wires are for the tilt/trim and I got them figured out.

Here is what I have,

AM to Black
B to Red
S to Red/Yellow
C to Yellow/Black

Here is where I'm unclear, does the Black/Yellow go to

M - Magneto , This seem to be ground when switch is on.

or

I - Ignition this seems to be Power when switch is on.

I have tried it both ways, no spark either way, could I have fried something?

Thanks

Ben

Re: V6 Engine Wiring

The black/yellow wire normally goes to your ignition switch. This is what shuts your engine off. It is grounded with the key off. What year is your engine? I haven't seen a V-6 with just 6 terminals on the switch box.

Re: V6 Engine Wiring

Thank you for the reply, The black/Yellow wire indeed is to be grounded. The motor runs now, but starts sometimes, sometimes it does not.

Today I will be going through the whole system, fuel & ignition.

This is what I'm working with

1983 Mercury 200 S/n 6244834

I bought this motor, dirt cheap, it has a new block. The motor had many electircal parts canabolized. I bought a same year parts motor to get the parts I needed.

The control was a side mount. I have converted over to a binicle mount, I also didn't have the keys to the original control. I am using the original Motor harness less the control. I am wiring in the new sierra switch MP41000. I believe I have it all wired correctly now.

I am going to check the timing and linkage today. I will post what I have found.

Thanks

Ben
wyomingben@wyomingben.com
