V6 looper powerhead compatibility

There doesn?t seem to be a good reference to understand compatibility of installing a powerhead from one year onto a midsection/lower unit of a different year. The best I can find is to check the part number of the exhaust housing adapter. If they match, it should be a simple swap. If they don?t match, it seems you can sometimes use the exhaust housing adapter from the original engine and install it on the replacement. The question is, how can you verify this will work?

I have a 1992 200HP Evinrude looper. I?ve disassembled the powerhead and it should be a clean rebuild. It was a freshwater engine and is in excellent condition, just needed new rings/gaskets/etc to restore compression. Rather than reinstall on the existing midsection/lower unit, I?m hunting around for a suitable engine with a 25? shaft (mine is a 20??wrong size for my boat). There are lots of options on craigslist, but none in the year range that is a clear direct swap. One, for example, is a 1996 225 HP with a different exhaust housing adapter. I don?t know how to figure out if my powerhead will work on this engine or other year?s midsection given that I could swap the exhaust housing adapter.

Any guidance is appreciated. Thanks!

If its a 1992 it a open deck block so mike the cylinders as they wear at a taper, I have never seen a open deck block that had any time on it that didn't need boring. All the loopers have same bolt pattern but you need to keep matching adapter with block if going to a 94 and up mid section..

Hmmm, good point. If it's high likelihood of requiring boring, perhaps I'll just drop it off at the local machine shop and have them do all the dimensional checks.

Thanks for the advice on the midsection fit. I figure I'm safe up to before the Ficht years if I keep the adapter.
