Anyone know the pupose on the Y-pipe for having the extra nipple plugged off with a rubber cap? The other end passes through the transom shield and empties into the water with a 90 degree elbow. Seems like a possible future issue, as upon disassembly, I noticed the rubber cap was barely rubbing on the bellhousing....we were close to having a major leak.

Here's a close up pic...maybe I can shorten the nipple a half inch?

the boats is ia '72 Chris Craft Lancer with a Volvo 270 outdrive. The engine is a Chev 5.7 marinized by a Yamaha Marine dealer perhaps 8 or 10 years ago.

After pulling the transom shield, it's obvious the boat had a different outdrive when new. Appears to have been a smaller bolt pattern on whatever was originally there.....however, at the top of the outside of the transom shield where it usually would say 'Volvo Penta' it has the Chris Craft logo.

Here's another angle on it. Took the rubber cap off, the inside was filled with 3M 5200.

Thinking of shortening th enipple, and threading the inside for a pipe plug....unless I should have a coolant hose routed to it?
