I wanted to share a couple of photos. My parents, who are both 83 years old, going on 30, are up at Valdez with my sister and brother-in-law for a couple of weeks.

Yesterday, they headed out on a charter boat for a little bit of open water fishing, with these results:

My mom is on the left, and that's the 104 lb. halibut she caught. She fought it on her own. My dad, looking over a couple of fish, said he caught one about 20 lb. The other two were caught by my brother-in-law. Mom had the big fish of the day. My dad? Well, he says that Mom can't go fishing with him any more.

My dad did manage to catch this rather large wolf eel, though. The question he'd ask is: "Which one's uglier?"

Way to go, you guys! It gives me hope that I'll still be catching fish in my 80's.

OH WOW !!!

Thats the most heart warming story and incredible picture I've seen in a very long time. THe fish is bigger than she is. Your Dad is a hoot.

Kudos to your parents. Nice haul! :)

Thanks! They're having a great time up there, like they always do. My dad's a hoot most of the time, but you've gotta watch him. He likes to play tricks on folks. :D

As a follow-up, I got a package the other day via FedEx, containing frozen halibut, with dry ice. Last night, I baked three nice chunks for dinner with my wife and mom-in-law. Very tasty, indeed.

Thanks, Mom! :D

Re: Valdez, Alaska

Hi CATransplant,
I just got back from a Valdez fishing trip myself, and although we didn't go out for 'but, we did pretty good in the salmon department.

We try to go down to Valdez every year (living up here in Alaska has it's benefits sometimes!) and now we are looking seriously at getting our own boat. It's a little late in the year to be shopping this year, but hopefully by next fishing season I'll be skippering my own fishing boat.

Looks like you folks had a really good time on their trip and it's good to see a successful day of fishing!
