Hello, first poster. I Just bought a 1997 Force 9.9 and was curios of the value vs what I paid. Its in prestine shape used very little on a Dingy to get out to a mooring. I ran it when I bought it and again in a tank when I got home. It runs great at all speeds and idles nicely. I doesnt appear to need anything. They guy that had it was a boat-guy and it was stored indoors in a heated basement.

I paid 600.00 for it. Its going on my 22 C.C. as a kicker. My main engine is a Force 150..I'm not a force fan, But I bought the boat with the 150 already and figured it would be a good match for what I'm going to use it for.

Thoughts?

Thanks.

Good motor!!! Fair price.Small motors can sell for 100$ a hp.Depending on age and comdition. Sounds like you got an OK deal.Jerry

My only beef is Force has been out of production for about 10 years. There is a dwindling parts supply.

couple hundred more than I would have offered, but when it dies it will make a very nice anchor.

Well, it will move your 22 CC but only at about 3 MPH. as a trolling engine, it will work well, but if you boat in water with a current and are using it as an emergency engine, battling the current will leave you with almost no headway.

You really need a couple of ponies more for that.

But the positives are that yes, it will be reliable. Yes, it can use the same fuel as your 150 so you can run it off the main tank using a quick-connect.

I however always carry a separate 3 gallon tank for the kicker so that if I have a fuel problem, or if I do something stupid like running out of gas, I can always get somewhere.

You may find that some people will consider $600 a bit high, BUT if you only have need for it once, it will have paid for itself. And, because of horsepower restrictions in fishing areas, the 9.9 always carries a premium price.

Years ago I bought a little Chrysler 8 HP for $25. I mounted it on an 18 foot closed bow Renken. One day, out with my wife, I snapped the prop shaft on my 125. I fired up the 8. Took me 2 hours to get back to the dock, but that little engine was PRICELESS in just the aggravation of not having to listen to the wife worrying, let alone saving at least a $200 tow bill. She just relaxed back and enjoyed the sun and slow cruise.

A very good buy. They are reliable motors. Not that hard to find parts for.I purchased an impellar for my 15 hp Force off Iboats for only 10 bucks.Even mercruiserparts.com still sells some parts for them.Other places include NAPA and secondary markets like Ebay.

Thanks all,

Thought I'd get mixed reviews, But agreed these small engines, if in good shape, can go for higher than expected. This one is very very clean and runs nice, so we'll see. thanks for the input :) Appreciated.

Thanks commander. Agreed. I remember as a Kid going out off Block Island, Rhode Island with my dad and having engine trouble. Dont want to get into that prediciment. It will be a very occasional trolling motor, and for emergency's. It was about 100-200 more than I wanted to spend, But it was so little used and in like new shape.

I have an 89 7.5 HP Force (Gamefisher) outboard and agree with all the replies.

It was in perfect condition when I bought it last year and has been a very good outboard,,, until I needed parts. The bad coil pack I need is no longer available so I'm looking at a $170 aftermarket ignition system, unless I happen to find a replacement at a reasonable price

Well here in Canuck country, a 1997 mint shape low hours usage 9.9 hp OB that would carry OMC or Mercury as brand name would sell for approx $ 1100. It would seem you got a fair deal for that 9.9 hp Force at $ 600.

I once had a 9.9 as backup kicker on a 21 footer powered by a 115 merc. Never needed it as an emergency OB but it was nice to know it was there. Plus I used it for troll fishing and coasting ... for less noise. Ran great ... but slow. (who cares ... lol) IMO any small kicker is underpowered for a boat that size.

Cheers

I don't know much about the smaller force engines but the most important thing is to ensure that ANY engine has a good history and has been well maintained. This is probably more important than buying by brand by a long shot.;)
As for spare parts, simply identify what is most likely to wear out or fail and keep an on eye on EBAY. It is full of both N.O.S and used Force stuff that can be had for a song...just be a little proactive about what you might need. Really, pretty simple stuff.
My two bits.
