Value of a 2001 Mercury 25hp motor? Play flip that motor!

So I dropped in a pawn shop today and saw a boat motor lying on the floor. I asked the guy what year it was and he didn't know, but he thought mid eighties. I looked closer and saw that it was a 2001. He is asking $450, but doesn't know if it runs. I am wondering what price range I can expect to get for this thing if it checks out as mechanically sound. I think he would let me take it to my mechanic for a day to check it out.

Most of my boat motors are thirty years older than this one, so I really have no point of reference to base its value upon. Thanks,

Also, this motor is set up for controls. If I were to keep it, I would need a tiller handle setup. If I elected to keep this motor, how difficult and expensive is it to convert this motor to be a tiller handle type?

serial number?. and a crap shoot. tell him 50 bucks. It is a pawn shop. The convert is pricey.????

Model is a 25EL
I know enough to check the compression before purchase. What is the motor worth if it runs?

In my area it would bring $500-650 depending on condition and it doesnt have control box. If it had a tiller handle and wasnt a long shaft it would bring $975-1200 easily. You can try to to get it cheaper as the pawn shop has about 50% of the asking price in it ,about $225...

It is a long shaft, and I can probably get a control box and cables from my local boat salvage yard for $150. Gotta check on that long shaft situation though.
