Foks,
I am new to your site and I have been reading through a number of threads to get as smart as I can as fast as I can. This could be a long process. So I would like some input.
I just acquired a 1973 Glastron 18 foot trihull with a Mercruiser 140 I/O. The hull seems sound, flooring is sound, seats are totally shot. At this point I am unsure of the engine, but I am sure the transom is shot. About 1 foot from the top the wood is just about gone. It is good and solid at the top, and sides. Question,
Is the value of the repaired boat, worth the value of the work necessary to repair the transom? Can the tansom be repaired or will it require all the wood be replaced? I've viewed a couple of 'YouTubes" on transom repair and it looks a little daunting but do able. I just need to know if it worth the effort.
Thanks
RL

Check this thread out & see what you are in for http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=580798 - Not my boat but lots of good reading and pictures. No the transom can not be repaired, Only replaced. I am not sure what the going rate is on a 73 Tri-Hull but I would look into that before you start unless you have some emotional attachment to it.

Welcome to iBoats!

You are the only one that can answer the "Worth the Effort" question. It you mean will you get your money back if you try and sell it, the answer is "Prolly not!" Can you do it... YEP!!! Can the transom be fixed, Nope, Replacement is your only option if it's as bad as you describe. Post up some pics so we can see what you're dealing with. If the motor will run and compression and all other mechanics are in good working order including the outdrive then you're looking @ somewhere around 2-3K to bring her back to a respectable/usable condition. 100 - 200 man hours of work. Good side is when she's done you'll KNOW you have a "Better than New" boat, structurally, and she'll serve you well for at least a decade. If you got out and spend 3-4K on a "Better" boat there's no guarantee that it won't need to have the same work done on it. Sorry but, again, the decision is yours. You WILL get a tremendous amount of help from the guys here on the forum, and you could not go anywhere better to find answers to your questions.

Is the value of the repaired boat, worth the value of the work necessary to repair the transom?

The simple answer is "no". By the time you get the boat back on the water the money spent will far exceed the value of the boat. But that isn't why people fix them.

The transom is the "tip of the iceberg" .......... expect more damage.

I echo the simple answer above....... "no"

You need to be in love with the boat to repair a transom (and MORE) and particularly with an I/O.

No.. its not gonna be worth the $ in the long run for you.

You can repair it .. you can rebuild it to a solid water transport ..

Not worth the money if your not in the boat repair shop loop.

If you have a supply line of materials .. then it could be worth the jing you put into it. .. to flip this boat.
