my first post

1987 17.5 ft Cabio Monte Carlo bowrider, 3.0 merc 140 / 181 ci..alpha one.

I had a bad cylinder head on engine with multiple cracks between each valve set,

I replaced the head with another 140 (it was of a used motor that block froze, but head was still good), engine ran ok but had cut out a little at higher rpm's. I thought it was a fuel problem but when i started troubleshooting everything was excellent as far as spark, timing and fuel . I then pulled a compression check and all cylinders were at 100 psi except the number 1 cylinder where I kept getting different readings, i then hooked up a air hose for a blow down test and could hear the air escaping out of the intake valve. so i backed of the valve and the valve reseated and the air leak stopped, I then did another compression check and all 4 cylinders were at 100-105 psi, obviously i screwed up the valve adjustment when i put the new head on.

my question is this, do i need to take the head of to further inspect or could i just put it back together and run till winter when I plan to rebuild or replace the engine

also is 100 psi a pretty average reading on a dry compression check

and one more question; can oil escape out of the head bolts that are outside of the valve cover (very small amount) because I have attempted to seal the valve cover twice but have concluded that valve cover is sealed. and possible head bolts leaking oil.

I have replaced the impeller, shift cable, ignition system , carburetor and totally rebuilt the boat (inside and out) with help from this forum, read everyday and enjoy it,,,thx
