Is it normal for 4.3 Merc (1998) to have a noisy lifters and valves? Not real loud but audible?

Also, can you drop in a fuel injected 4.3 in place of a carbed version?

no it is not normal to have noisy lifters,
They make fuel injection units that you can buy and install.(pretty sure they do anyway)If you had all the parts to go with the other fuel injection setup you could probly do it.

Re: Valve train

I gotta disagree a little with vip, a little noise is normal. The valve lift system is a bunch of mechanical parts with small clearances being driven up very quickly by the cam. There is no such thing as a completely quiet system. The real issue is in the level of noise you are hearing. It sould not be any louder than you are used to hearing on your car engine. My guess is you are hearing something unusual or you wouldnt be posting but you have got to be a bit more specific, kidding aside, I bet there are a bunch of guys on this site that could tell not only if it is normal or not but what is wrong if they could here it. They only way they have to hear it is through you!! My guess also is you are having some issue with the engine and you think the valve noise is the problem. Also, you are inquiring about a very expensive upgrade ($2000 or more) also to solve a problem. Why dont you give the whole story and give these guys a chance to help you with the real problems,

Re: Valve train

vatter41, you are right, every motor makes some noise. I am assuming that it sounds noisier to him or he would not be asking, that is why I said it is not normal to have noisy lifters. That is why I asked him in the last reply to describe what it sounds like.

Re: Valve train

I was joking there... Anyway, it is little hard to describe I guess but it sounds like my Jeep Cherokee's inline 6. So, if you have heard one, that is what it sounds like.

Re: Valve train

basicall, I just wanted to know if it is supposed to sound like a car, as stated. My Jeep had a normal noisy valve trin by desgin and it is exactly the same noise level and sound. I asked about the fuel injected as a side note. At some point, I am going to either replace this engine or buy a new boat. If I replace this engine, I would like to drop in the EFI version due to the gain of 30hp and more efficient. I use this boat at least 2 or 3 times a week and I feel like at some point soon, something is going to give.
