Variable pitch prop?

I haven't seen any mention of these here. Has anyone else considered this as an option? ProPulse makes a series with adjustable pitch that you set manually. Aerostar Marine makes automatic props that start off at a lower pitch and then shift to a higher pitch at an adjustable set point. These are a bit pricey but seem like a great idea otherwise. I'm curious to hear others opinions.

Re: Variable pitch prop?

Thanks for the reply. I found the Land & Sea website and will call for a catalog. Turns out hey're only an hour away from me.
I searched here but did not find a thing. Maybe I'm doing something wrong?
What I've found elsewhere:
Most people who have bought them swear by them.
Aerostar has a 30 day return policy. I may try one (next season) and I'll report back here.

Re: Variable pitch prop?

One thing I do know - the Land & sea prop does a gradual shift to the higher pitch, which many consider better, and Aerostar has a sudden shift, like a transmission.

It does appear L&S has dropped their prop, but parts are still available...

Re: Variable pitch prop?

Quicksilver used to manufacture a shifting prop, early 1990's. Rumor has it, Mercury stopped making them because of the cost, over $900 retail. The 21 pitch on my 23 footer starts out at 15 pitch, then shifts to 21 pitch. When the prop is adjusted for the load in the boat, the boat in on plane so fast it's scary, imagine a 454 turning a 15 pitch propeller. Look on EBay for a used one. Best return for the money spent.

I called Land & Sea. They had a fire some time ago and lost all their tooling for the prop. They made a decision not to re-invest into more tooling. Read into that what you may.
Looks like Aerostar is the only one now.
