VDO gauges on my 01 Bayliner

So speedometer hasn't work since I got the boat in May. Found a local shop to replace my hull plug and asked him about the speedometer, and i got "VDO gauges are junk and it is more expensive to fix them than replace them". He did shot air into the tube and the gauge didn't move. I guess I am good by sayin I am running at 3200 RPM and it seems fast



Any thoughts on stock VDO gauges being crap?
