venting portable tank

I have 6 gallon manually vented tank in my tin fishing boat it sits under the port seat. There are 2 things I dislike about it:

1) I have to disconnect/connect the fuel line at the motor every outing and a little fuel sometimes spills.

2) There is a manual vent on it and I can often smell gas when I fish.

So I want to turn it into a permanent type setup:

a) vent the gas differently so I smell it a lot less. Perhaps through the hull?
Will a better venting mechanism make a difference? How do I do this?

b) add a filling nozzle and hole to the spashwell.

help?

Re: venting portable tank

The question about converting a portable to a permanent tank comes up from time to time. At this time there are no fittings designed to convert a portable to permanent.

But keep in mind that a full permanent tank will have a fuel smell too, even if properly vented through the hull of the boat, especially in a small boat where the vent will still be close to the occupants. A permanent tank often leaks fuel when full through the vent when in rough waters.

There is the advantage of being able to fill up at the station without removing a portable tank, but this convenience comes at a premium when you look at the expense of a permanent tank.

If you want to get an idea whats involved with installing a small permanent tank, check out my 17 gallon permanent tank project on my Bayliner.

I am thinking of doing the same thing, and I think it can be done easily if you have the plastic tank. Remove the vent from the cap and screw in a fitting with a female air chuck. Get a length of hose with the male chuck fitting on it and route wherever you want. The air chuck should make it easy to pull apart so you can takt it out to fill.

Or put a longer line on your rig and move the tank forward so you won't smell the fumes...might make it plane and ride better, too. You don't have to open the vent all the way, just enough to allow the tank to breathe.
