i just want to rant and cry for a minute here, im an x omc guy. just got my first merc outboard, she runs good, but what a pain it is to work on it compared to the omc, the plugs and fuel filter were buried compared to my evinrude. i would be screwed if i ever had to change them on the lake! i like the once piece cowls better. lol end rant :p

Re: venting

You might want to check your year model as the 1987 70 is a 3 cylinder with clam shell cowling and every thing is easily accessed...

Re: venting

24 oz of gear oil sounds right.

The older Mercs are very compact compared to the Johnnyrudes. You do need to take off the cowl suports to get to most things. You get used to it, and the advantages outweigh the disadvantges, IMHO. Notice how little shift and carb linkage the Merc has. Very little to get out of adjustment and very simple to adjust. Try that with those OMCs.

Use an open end wrench on the lowest spark plug.

Re: venting

The wrap around cowl does suck!! However the good thing is with a Merc you hardly ever have to take it off. Until the distributor went out on my dad's '78 3 years ago, I doubt he took the band off. Maybe for routine maintence like changing the spark plugs...

Re: venting

What???? The coolest part of a modern merc is the cowl wrap, the top comes off with a lever. The even newer ones come off with the flick of a metal lever.
