My first boat is a sailboat. It does have a 4hp Mercury (1991 model). I purchased it from an Estate. A brief History of the boat...It was purchased from the local Yacht Club in 1982, in 1991 the 3.5 hp motor was replaced as it would not start after sitting for several years. In 2002 the motor had the impeller replaced after it had been sitting unused for 6 years. In 2003 the sails were refurbished, after sitting for 7 years. It sat in a driveway for 8 years before I purchased it. When I got it, there was about 4 inches of standing water in the hull, the bag of sails half submerged and assorted metal cables and brackets were rusting nicely on and around the bag.

The good news...the hull is solid, the wood inside is solid, and the keel pin is NOT buried in fiberglass.

The bad news...If it could flake off, it has. The keel winch and cable are shot, the keel pin is cut by the winch cable. Tiller? You call that 2x6 a tiller? Last pic is the trailer doing an excellent job clamping my new tiller.

Let the scraping begin.

I'd expect any wood submerged to be ruined from the standing water in the hull. Did you drill test cores in the wood?
I see lots of free sailboats around cape cod area, they are usually in need of a lot of work and the bigger ones are expensive to keep.

Everything is solid, no loose spots, no hollow sounds. The ONLY bad wood was a 1x2 used to hold the hatch that was cut to put foam under the floor. It was cracked. I removed it, removed foam, poked, looked and saw NO damage. Replaced the broken 1x2, screwed cut hatch back down.

I removed the winch and the keel cable guide screw, off to Northern Tool for a new winch and the search for the stainless steel bolt begins.

Re: Venture 17

Scraping was an effort, decided to rent a power washer for the inside of the boat. I was not expecting to have to stop so often to drain the water out of the boat. Several hours later, ALL loose material is gone, the interior is close to clean enough to repaint.

I did notice while spraying inside, water running outside at the rub rail. I plan to caulk the seam before I paint. Now I know how the 3/16 vinyl covered plywood trim was water damaged.
