Very Antique Evinrude

My father-in-law acquired an Evinrude motor sometime during the 70's from a farmer in North Dakota (I believe). We are trying to determine what year it may have been manufactured. There are no serial numbers on it - my husband believes it may be one of the earliest motors manufactured. It appears to have been hand made?? Any ideas how we can determine its age. I believe it still runs.<br /><br />C Hendrickson

Look for an ID plate on the side of the transom bracket. If not there, model # may be on top of the rope sheave. Any way you can post a pic?

If you know it's an Evinrude and it doesn't have an ID tag, then it is NOT one of the earliest made, as even the earliest Evinrudes had a brass tag on them with the serial number on it. The earliest Evinrudes did not come with a decal on them, either. If it has a cast exhaust manifold with Evinrude Rowboat Motor on it, then it's later, still. The eariliest ones would be from 1909. It would have a tag on top of the gas tank. Some 1920s Evinrudes had the tag on the clamps, between the thumbscrews.<br /><br />Teens era rowboat motors would have a single cylinder, pointing forward. This was common to most Rowboat motors of the period, as many copied Evinrude's design... Some exceptions, but that was the most common...<br /><br />Bottom line is that we need a photo or two, some numbers, a better description, etc. before we can give you any sort of ID...<br /><br />- Scott
