Very Basic Question

I recently acquired a 1970 40HP Mercury Outboard. It ran ok this summer but I want to rebuild the carb and fuel pump before next season b/c I had some rough idling and stalling at very low speeds. I have the Seloc manual for the engine. I am new to this and my basic question is how to get to the fuel pump and carb around the engine framing. I know how to take off the piece that surrounds the engine and the top but there is still a metal frame/plate in front of the carb. Also, the bottom bolt on the fuel pump is below the bottom part of the engine frame and I could never fit a wrench in there to get it off or put it back together. I was able to run the gas out, fog the engine and grease the lower unit but am thinking ahead to the work I want to do. The manual has great instructions but doesn't give basic info about accessing the different parts. Thanks - Dan

Yes, it is the manual that covers the 1965 through 1989 but I only have a hard copy. Got it from Amazon.

I have not been able to find a factory service manual. Any idea of how I can obtain one?
