very choppy on plain

I have a 1977 terry bass boat with a 1979 evinrude 85 hp ob with power tilt and trim when I take off I lower the trim all the way down when I get up on plain I trim up and the boat bounces very bad if I dont trim up its fine and smooth any and all feedback welcome

Do you mean by "bouncing" that the bow raises and lowers in a kind of rythmic pattern? [Also known as porpoising]. Or is it just rough riding and "bouncy"?

Check the hull it sounds like it may have a hook or a rocker.Is the boat riding nose down when on plane or leaning to one side or the other?

Does it do it with more than just you in it or when you are by yourself. If it does it when you are by yourself and not when someone is with you, then you have a out of balance boat. IE: To much weight in back.

mercrude,<br /><br />If the boat is "porpoising" (rythmic cycling of the bow raising and falling) it is caused by excess weight in the front of the boat. Or, it can be caused by an engine that cannot hold the bow up due to: not enough power or a prop. that does not have enough bite.

this boat bounces up and down with myself and one other person and front and back live wells full two six gal gas cans in back and two batters in back light fishing gear only have had boat out twice since bought used I looked at prop and it has some nicks on all three blades

Mercrude-<br />Is there a serious decrease in performance if you maintain the trimmed down position that you said rides perfect? With the weight you have in the boat, you might simply have to maintain that trim level to equilibrate the boat..... Also if you want adjustment ability, ,make sure the tilt adj. rod that mounts thru transom bracketr is on its lowest setting...that will allow you to trim motor further down for getting on plane and then trim up depending on planing speed and weight in/around on boat. good luck

I would try to get some of the weight out of the stern.It will give a better holeshot and may<br />reduce the porpising.<br /> Dont trim all the way out, just to the fastest<br />smooth speed.

trim it all the way down when coming out of the hole.When it gets on plane trim it up until it starts to porpose then trim it down just enough to stop bouncing it is more of a feel thing trim gauges are not good for much maybe to tell you when it is all the way down or up. If it is bouncing probably to high plowing too low no two boats act the same .Boats are a balancing game .
