Very frustrated..2000 200Hp Ficht cuts off after about 1/2 hour no alarm sounded

Don't know next step, even mechanic is baffeled. Starts up great, idles great, go out about a half an hour or so, engine cuts off, no alarms. Wait 10 minutes, starts up, go about 10 minutes than cuts off again. My mechanic said if it is EMM an alarm should go off, I read sometimes that does not happen. Any suggestions, I am going to ask him to send to DFI.

Might be an issue in fuel system ie: not venting, clogged filter(s), loose connections?

Did you try pumping the primer bulb when it happens ? When you turn the key on can you hear the high pressure fuel pump run for 10 seconds ?

Talked to DFI today. they said if the EMM overheats, a larm will go off and the boat slows down but there is a circuit breaker inside the EMM and when that expands the engine just cuts off with no alarm. He said he is 99.9 percent sure that is the problem. The mechanic is sending it back today and why it is going, he is checking over the whole cooling system to make sure everything is okay. I will keep you posted next week. Sure hope this is the problem. thanks

Sent EMM back, got it the other day and test driven the boat. Thank the lord everything is fine. Something wrong with the thermostate or something like that it is called was faulty. I sent it to DFI and they said they do alot of upgrades.

Glad it is back in action. The 2000 and 2001 EMMs had some low quality components in them as OMC was in financial troubles back then. The 2002 and later models were redesigned and improved by Bombardier who bought Evinrude in 2001.

The part that went wrong is called a PTC, don't know what that stands for, might call DFI Tuesday to know what that stands for and what they think caused that, just curious.....

Took the boat out fishing, first time since I have gotten it fix, Knock on wood, what a pleasure it was today. Started up right up, idled great and most importantly never cut out. The boat ran today the best it has ran for years. Its been along summer but I am ready for fall fishing soon. DFI did a great job.

Hi,

A PTC is a temperature-dependant resistor (Positive Temperature Coefficient), basically it increases resistance as it gets hotter. Usually used for protection against over-current (e.g. to protect a motor driving a windshield-wiper if the wiper gets stuck --> higher current --> hotter PTC --> PTC increases resistrance and hence limits current and stops the motor from breaking).

Sometimes PTC:s are used to measure temperature. Anyway they tend to break after overheating repeatedly e.g. due to over-current.

Either the size of the PTC is under-dimensioned from OMC, or some other fault caused the PTC to fail, my guess is the first. If so it is cheap and easy (if you know electronics) to fix IF it is possible to open the EMM, but I assume it is permanently sealed.

I am experiencing the same frustration, I have the outboard over to the mechanics and they are telling me to trade it on another outboard but don't want to do this as it has been good until now, it has only 200 hrs on it and I suspect the problem may be in the EMM. I have considered purchasing another EMM but not confident this will fix the problem especially if it is outside the EMM. Could you let me know where the PTC would be located.
