Got a frustrating problem with my motor. It starts and runs beautifully and runs fine at speed most of the time. However I'm experiencing a very intermittent hiccup when cruising. While cruising at 80% throttle it will, just for a second, drop RPM. It did it twice on a short outing a month ago but I just figured it was some crap or air in the fuel line. The real problems occurred on Thursday when my wife and I set off for a 25 mile cruise on the Chesapeake. It did it twice in the first 20 minutes of our journey. We then met up with some friends on the water and stopped for about 20 minutes to chat. When we set off again, it did it like 3 times in about 5-10 minutes which killed my confidence in it so we decided to head back. Of course, it didn't do it again at all on the trip back. We ate lunch and then set out again for a short ride staying close to the ramp and we cruised around for about a half hour or so and it didn't do it once. Fuel was fresh.

If this was your motor, what would you check? I'm thinking electrical because of how quickly the drop happens and resumes. I'm thinking of removing each of my coils and checking/cleaning all the connections. This motor did have a thorough carbs rebuild done to it the beginning of the 2010 season although I suppose that wouldn't rule out a dirty carb.

a quick miss on the coils at speed would be hardly noticeable unless it was completely dropping the coil for a while. you'd think if it were electrical then it would get worse as the day went on and the motor ran more and heated things up. sounds like fuel. perhaps a sticky float that's getting stickier?

Yeah I agree, I guess something electrical would probably just get worse.
