I have a 1976 7.5 with very lose steering with the tiller handle.
Looks like I may have to remove the saddle to access the nut to tighten it up ? I am aware of the 2 bushing and hope there not wore out , The swivel seems snug but just turns top easy you cant let go of the tiller without it swinging left or right .

So any one know how to tighten this up and what do I have to do to get to the adjustment mechanism?

Thanks

Re: Very lose steering tiller handle.

have a look at a parts catalog for your outboard, for example at boats dot net. go to SWIVEL BRACKET ASSEMBLY and have a look at part #17, #18 and #19.

if you still have all the parts then tightening the "co pilot" nut would do the trick.

good luck

Re: Very lose steering tiller handle.

I have looked at the parts catalog and downloaded a service Manuel , see a nut and bushing on top and bottom of the SWIVEL BRACKET in the parts catalog but don't see them on the motor looks like I need to do some dissembling to get to them ,want to keep that to the min. will just removing saddle give access to the bottom nut be enough to do the job or will I need a wrench on the top and bottom
nut to tighten it up ?

Re: Very lose steering tiller handle.

if everything is still there ther should not be a need to dissassemble anything.
here another usefull link, where you can download the manual for your merc.
download dot brunswick-marine dot com/download

-go to link bottom left, Operation and Maintenance Manual
-select outboard on the right
-select 1973-1978
-clik the adobe link for the manual

it's described there a bit better with pics on how to adjust.
