VERY NEEDED ANSWER

Hello everyone again,

I have posted before about choosing the right boat, as of now it is definitely going to be a crestliner. I am still stuck between a mirage 2000 or a 1950 sportfish with the price difference as the 2000 is much cheaper for the setup i wish to have.

Now for my question. I can't figure out what type of motor to get on my crestliner. I have researched Ultimax's/E-TECS/Yamaha HPDI and need a lot of input on this one. Anyone here know how well these engines run. Anyone have a 2002 or newer motor of either of these engines? Anyone know if i spend 35+ thousand if I'm going to get a solid 20+ years with these engines with NO major problems.

Appreciate any feedback

Hey Jaxin, You won't get many replies in the Crestliner section. If you want advise on a motor you would be better off posting in the Outboard section. Those topics get alot more traffic than this one.

Personally I think either of those motors will last you a long time. You just have to look after it. Make sure you do all the proper maintenance.

You must have a good marina near you...
everywhere around me you do not get a motor choice...you get what the marina sells...and that is it! ( and it is almost exclusively Mercury with the exception of the LOWE dealer who uses Evinrude)
I asked if I could order or exchange the standard motor for an E-Tec when I was shopping ( I got frustrated and have temporarily stopped shopping)...every marina I talked to said no.

Re: VERY NEEDED ANSWER

it's your money get what you want. buy the boat you want one place, and the motor elsewhere if you have to. the boat dealer will warrant the boat, the engine dealer will warrant the motor and installation. of course they are going to argue who is at fault. Be Strong.

It's all personal opinion, like cars, your gonna get a warranty for any of those 3 engine's, but you need a place that can work on it. My personal opinion is that the Etec is the best piece of machinery on the market today, including 4-strokes and get's better economy than any, including 4 strokes. Opinions will differ, but that's mine.

Re: VERY NEEDED ANSWER

It may be hard to buy a separate boat/motor/trailer since lots of companies are selling packages today.

I like the idea of a package as you get it all packaged by factory folks who do the same thing day in and day out so they have all the tools and expertise they need to do the job. Plus the factory is behind you on the warranty.

Not whacking local marine dealers, but just like cars, anything that comes from the factory is "built in".

I also agree on buying what they are selling locally even though it may not be my brand. Nothing like having them handy when you need them.

Then you have to ask yourself WHY is that dealer selling that brand? Price, factory package, factory incentives, PERFORMANCE AND RELIABILITY?

Was in a computer store one day and the guy was an independent, but had Dell stuff all over the place; a year prior there was no Dell in the store.

I inquired and his answer was "Dell just works and I don't have to hassle with it". So maybe the marine dealer wants something that works and sells and allows him to do things other than dream up excuses for you as to why you are having problems with your widgit you bought from him.

My 2c

Mark

Brunswick owns many boat builders. And Mercury.

Guess why the boat dealer sells Mercs?

Re: VERY NEEDED ANSWER

Cost about 3 grand more with an E-TEC, but i think it's worth it. I was contemplating on the merc verado, but it's only been out like 2 years and in my opinion an engine needs to be out more than 2 years to get all the screws tightened in it , if you know what i mean.

Brunswick basically owns the marine world today, and that's a close fact.

Glad to see that someone believes E-TEC is the best out there, from my homework i've found that there are a lot of hardcore merc people out there, but most people say the same about the E-TEC that it's a great engine. Hence why i payed a little extra and got it.

Anyone know how much more HP is given out with the HO E-TEC. Heard that it's mostly for tournaments when they have a max HP engine allowed so HO is suppose to put out some more umph.

Re: VERY NEEDED ANSWER

texasmark
if you belive that factory stuff I got some land to sell. next low tide come have a look.
at least 70% of my warrenty work is fixing 6 dollar an hour riggers work. yamaha DOES NOT manufacture boats for sale in the US, just outboards, they do still make stern drives and the do have some agreements to supply motors to certain hull manufacturers.
my personall opinion, and I work on them daily even on weekends, is if you can use a 150 carbed then yamaha makes the best.
when ya forget or make a mistake or neglect the fuel system I can usually get it back in service for less than 300. the HPDI high pressure pump by itself is about 700 and injectors are over 300 each.
I think the injector driver is about 800 and the ECU over 1200.
there is about 250 dollars woth of fuel filters on the HPDI alone that SHOULD be replaced at least annually.
I see and saw a lot of early FICT and Optimax problems, they say most are resolved.
a friend of mine was an omc dealer for over 30 years and is now BRP. he says E-tec is wonderful but I dont see any in my area.
best thing I can say is buy it from a trusted dealer, buy the extended warrenty making sure its actually a FACTORY warrenty not a third party one and do the maint, pay attention to the maint schedule as most say so many hours OR so many months. emphasis on the OR.

Re: VERY NEEDED ANSWER

Alumacraft will sell you any model you want. All you need to tell the dealer is that you want Model xxxx with "no pre-rig". Then buy your engine wherever you wish. Some dealers will tell you they "don't sell loose engines". Tell them too bad, and continue shopping. The selling dealer will rig it. Keep in mind you will have to buy the controls, cables, harnesses and any additional instruments specific to the engine you end up with.

Re: VERY NEEDED ANSWER

good to hear rodbolt that you got a friend who thinks E-TEC is great, just crossing my fingers that when i take it out saturday or sunday that it runs fantastic and runs that way for a long time.

Rodbolt:

Seems that you are a mechanic, would you suggest to run the E-TEC wide open as they say it is supposedly ready to be run that hard? Or should i give it a few weeks/hrs of running time before pulling a wakeboarder/tuber(s) with it. If you suggest doing the second, how long should i run it (in hours) before unleashing it on the open water?
Another question is with a 200 HP E-TEC H.O., how fast do you think it's top speed could be with 2/3 people in a 1950 sportfish? The dealer/mechanics at the marina i'm purchasing it from believe it could put out up to 65 MPH, but i would like another person's input. Not gonna race it, just curious to see if an E-TEC is that powerful.

Thanks

Re: VERY NEEDED ANSWER

every motor is great (even 4-strokes) when they work!
when they don't work they all suck (some less then others)
buy your motor from a dealer with factory trained techs who can fix it with confidence
if you have a evinrude dealer near by then e-tec is your answer
if dealer/service are a far distance then may-be a different brand is a better choice for you
p.s we are a evinrude/johnson dealer who have trained techs and we have had few problems with ficht e-tec and d.i. engines
may be trained techs is the answer????????
