Re: vhf antenna connector

That depends on the type of connector you have. Do a Google search for "coax cable connector installation".

I've used both solder, and solderless, with much better results with the solderless. It also depends on what kind of coax you have.

Re: vhf antenna connector

is it a crimp style connector or one you have to solder? here a instruction page on how to solder a standard PL-259 connector. Shakespeare makes a new crimp style connector that is supposed to be easy to install and makes as good a connection as soldering. with modern technology, soldering is becoming a lost art.

I think it depends more on your soldering skills. Of course, I was an electronic technician for most of my working days.

The best installation would be a soldered connection done by a technician or someone skilled and experienced at soldering electronic connectors.

If this is not you, a solderless connection might be best.

If you have any CB shops at area truck stops they will solder a PL-259 on the cable for about 5 bucks.
Any truck stop sells the connectors too...
The crimp style are ok but don't seem to work as well as having the center conductor wire soldered to the connector.

I can solder, but am nowhere near an expert. Soldering an end on isn't like soldering wires together, getting it just right through those little holes is above my skill set.
But I've also been told by skilled techs that the solderless are the way to go, have you tried on yet?

BTW try a SWR meter on both, technology is a wonderful thing ;)

If you do it right, you don't get many chances unless you're still working.

No. I removed a crimp on connector that was on my boat when I bought it and replaced it with a solder type. Those "skilled techs" are saving time and to them, that's money.

As someone else posted, soldering is becomming a lost art. Toward the end of my technician days, "crimp" connectors were being used more and more.
