I just got to wondering after 2 years of owning my 19 ft. cuddy if I require a licence to operate the radio , or even have it in the boat.I was "pulled over" by Canadian coast guard (safety check) and passed and it never came up.Just wonderin is all??

The way I understand it... its legal to have and listen to,but not legal to broadcast(talk) unless you have a licence.I've had one on my boats for 15 years without a licence. You can get certified by your local power squadran if you like. I've been meaning to,and maybe will one day.

Jim.

I got my VHF marine license this past spring . It was through the Power Squadron and it was fast , inexpensive , interesting and easy . I don't think you would be in major trouble if you were to call a Mayday however the course will teach you proper procedure and rules .

Have one in my boats for emergency use and have been checked by both Canadian and US Coastguard boats and have never been questioned on wether or not I have a "Radio License".I suppose one day that will become "mandatory" also.

Re: VHF radio. Canadian boaters.

You are supposed to have a "Restricted Operator's Certificate (Maritime)" to operate the VHF and up until a couple of years ago you also had to have a station license (renewable every year for around $35?) this actually gave you a call sign but they did away with that, amazing that the government would stop charging for something? The operators license was to teach people the correct way to use the radio so it didn't go the way of CB's back in the 70'and 80's but they do seem to be a little less concerned these days. By the way once you write the test for the operators license it's for life so it's a one time deal.
