Can someone explain the procedure to perform a radio check before getting underway? Thanks.

Re: VHF Radio Check

Here in NoCal Delta ch 68 is the channel mostly used. Once launched and pulling out of the dock, I say, "Radio Check 68". When I get a response, I say, "Thanks for the come back".

Don't know about the U.S. of A, but downunder the CG are happy to respond to a radio check request, as long as you keep it short and sweet. It's also comforting to know that someone with the means to rescue you is actually listening.

Coast Guard in US will not respond to a radio check. You are not allowed to make a general call to "any radio" in a non emergency situation. All radio calls should be directed to a specific receiver (VHF Marine is not CB). Make your call to a friend or a marina to check your radio or check from your handheld to your fixed mount and vice-versa (on one watt).

Re: VHF Radio Check

while I'm not sure about not being allowed to make a general call to "any radio" during a non emergency situation. I am certain that if this is a rule, its not enforced. Not everyone has friends out on the lake to make a call to. Make your radio check short and sweet, something to the effect " this is vessel (insert name here) calling for a radio check on (channel) over" Wait for someone to answer and if possible ask them for their location so you can see how far away you are being picked up. I once called for a radio check, got a comeback with loud and clear, asked for his location, turns out he was about 100 yds ahead of me in the channel, not a whole lot of help. Around here, channel 68 is used mainly by fishermen and charters, never had a problem getting a radio check.

Also forgot to add, don't make the radio check on 9 or 16. 9 is emergency, and 16 is the hailing channel.
