I just got an icom M34 handheld. I'm confused about what dual/tri watch is and how it is different from the scanning function? I'd appreciate any help and clarification offered.

Thanks!

Lets see if I can help here.

Dual watch = You are listening to two channels at the same time. One primary and one secondary. For example, channel 16 and channel 9. If something is broadcast on either channel, you will hear it. If something is being broadcast on both channels, the primary will take over.

Scan = Will run through a continuous loop of all the channels and pause on any channel that has activity on it. There are 2 types of scan, Normal and Priority. Normal does the loop continuously. Priority scans channel, then channel 16 then the next channel then back to 16 and so on.

Your icom manual show it best:

Tri watch is similar to dual watch. In addition to 16 and 9, you add one additional channel of your choice. In fact, scanning on many radios can consist of only the channels you select to be scanned but typically is selected as an "all available".

Re: VHF Radio - Dual/Tri Watch?

Thanks all. I am able to select "tagged" channels and then scanning only runs through those channels. That's why I didn't understand dual or tri watch. It seems like a "mini" scan. I appreciate everyone's help/input!
