I need to equip my boat with a vhf radio and can't decide on a handheld or fixed. Will be boating on Kona side of Big Island(Hawaii).I realize Handhelds don't have the range of fixed, but could it be attached to an ext. ant?I like handheld because you're independent of boats power source, you can drop in batteries as you need them, and the radio goes with you.Been looking at Icom and Standard Horizon.Know a good online site for a package deal???

Don't waste time on handheld. Get the fixed first. Later, get a handheld for errands, tender work, etc. Fixed will go about 9 miles to another boat, over 20 to Coast Guard station. Handhelds are lucky to go a mile or two.

Hand helds max out at 5 watts transmitting power. A fixed VHF is usually 25 watts. If you're looking for communication without much range, you could use a hand held CB or FRS at much less cost.

You can get external antennas and speakers for some hand held VHF's.

Try www.cabelas.com

or

www.overtons.com
