I just installed a new vhf radio on my boat, but when I call someone on it they here a buzz in the background. My stereo speakers also humm when I turn the stereo on as well. Can anyone explain why this may be happening.

Yep, DN.

Poor job of wiring. Wire directly to the battery.

Moving to electronics.

And consider running your power leads through a filter.

Re: VHF Radio Hums

AmigaDragon has this one right. You need a "spark" filter.. like from radio shack or most any store that sells electronics. Helps reduce spark plug noise if that is what your getting. Helps frankly with most other noises as well. You also could have the noise inducing into your wires (in the case of the speakers). make sure your speaker wires are run as far from any other wires as possible or add a metal shielding on the out side and ground it to the radio. Note only ground the shield at one end..i.e. the radio. If you ground it at both ends it will do nothing.
George
