I'm just about ready to exchange radios between my boats. Has anybody done this with an MMSI unit? If so, what is the protocol for making the swap? Thanks.

From what agency did you obtain the marine mobile service identities?

It was done online. I'm pretty sure it was a US Coast Guard site.

Re: VHF Radio swap

I never heard of a US Coast Guard website where one can register an MMSI. That is very unusual.

In any case, if you do not have an FCC-issued MMSI you can probably contact your registrar and change the information on the MMSI registration more easily than you can change the MMSI coded into the radios. Modern DSC radios tend to prohibit the user from changing the MMSI associated with the radio, and you will likely have to send the radios back to the manufacturer in order to have their MMSI data changed.

If you have a FCC-license and MMSI you would have to file a license modification, which is complicated and expensive. In that case it will be easier to change the radios.

You must discover with what agency you have registered the MMSI. I cannot help you with that.

I'll do some digging on how I received the MMSI #. It sounds like it'll be easier to just purchase a new radio, wth?

I don't know if this will work, but before spending $ on a new radio I would first try going to www.boatus.com/mmsi/. From there you should see a link that says "Click here if you want to update information for your existing MMSI number"
