hello, i finally got my deck and partial stringer replacement done for the last part of this season and got the boat out on the water (87 cobia bowrider 4.3 cobra dog clutch drive). I now seem to have a vibration from maybe 1500-2500 rpm that i didnt notice last season. Smooths out nicely at 3000 rpm and over with the boat trimmed. Feels like a bad u-joint in a car (high frequency type) but doesnt really seem to change with steering or trim, maybe a LITTLE but that could be from different loads on the hull i was thinking. Its not a noise but a feeling. I had the leg off over the winter and had it resealed, and before i put it back on i checked the alignment and seemed to me to be good. The u-joints seemed fine, not loose OR stiff and the gimble bearing was smooth. My prop isnt in the best of shape but the guy that did the drive reseal said it wasnt that bad. It definetly has dings and one nice warp? ,lack of a better term on one of the blades which concerns me. Is it possible that it could be the prop and i didnt notice it last yeay because the boat wasnt as solid? I am also noticing a shimmy in the steering at low rpm like a bad belt in a car tire feels in the steering wheel. that also goes away at higher rpm but if i remember right, that did that last year. I want to replace the prop anyway and go to a 4 blade, now has a 14 1/2 X 19 3 blade. Just wondering if i might be on the right track. thanks

You're on the right track. Why spend the money on a 4 blade? You aren't running a hot rod. The 19 is a perfect choice but save the money and go 3 blade aluminum. If you want to step up go SS but 4 blade isn't worth it.

well, from what i've been reading here, i thought the 4 blades were better for (1) less vibration and (2) better planing at lower speed which I would like. I figured if I needed a new prop anyway, why not kill 2 birds with 1 stone. I saw one here on iBoats for just over a hundred bucks which I thought was very reasonable, unless I looked it up wrong. I think it was a solas alum. type. Ill have to check again. Thanks for the reply. Any more opinions on the 3 to 4 blade switch are welcome, i'm very open.

Your prop could easily be the problem. Also, just so you know, running an out of balance prop is really tough on your drive.

ok, prop for starters then, thanks. My season is almost over anyway so the boat wont see much more use. Should i move the question of 4 blade or 3 blade prop the props section? Is there a way to link back to this thread if i do that?
