video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iEnAfX_8JXo

first time i am there is in forward.
then i go away and put in neutral.
then i go away and put it in reverse.

i tried to use manual to help but the closest i could get which is what it as right now is the prop will spin smooth with no clicking or catching in neutral. otherwise its the same as in the video.
i went to the lake and i was able to go forward and reverse with not much trouble.
so should i leave it as it is? when i click into gear (forward or reverse) there is a pretty loud noise indicating that its got in gear. its just not a smooth transition so i am worried that i will end up wearing out the splines on the gear shaft or whatever you call that.

dealing with merc 120hp 2.5L, 1988. alpha 1 gen 1

No clutch. You move it smartly into gear. you do not ease it. some people lightly pop the lever with the palm of they're hand. Make sure the idle is down to normal. ie the choke released.

what the video shows is normal with the exception of the clicking in neutral.Sounds like a simple cable adjustment will get rid of the clicking in neutral.

so its normal to have clicking when in either reverse or forward. of course one way it will not spin but opposite way it spins but has that clicking sound.

how much are you supposed to tighten the oil filter when you put it in place??

I just put new oil, spark plugs, outdrive serviced. the boat just wont start up in first try. i have to always pull the shifter so only giving it gas feed and turn the ignition then push the shifter so gas is feeding then it will fire up. not sure why it wont start when just in neutral!

IT'S NOT fuel injected! You must pump the throttle a couple of times to squirt gas into cylinders.
Your control box has a "throttle only" position. It may be a button you push in & move lever forward. Or it may be you pull the lever straight out & move it forward. In either case, when the lever stands straight up, it automatically will go into gear next time it is moved!
Your shifting is "normal" sort of. Fwd will turn CW but not CCW & REV will turn CCW but not CW. Both "clicking" in the free spin direction. The clicking in "neutral" is not normal. That usually happens from over adjusted cables to "get by with". It can ruin the "clutch dog & gear set". Try adjusting yourself.
Disconnect shift cable from control box to shift bracket. Push shift arm toward intermediate shift cable while turning prop CCW. Measure the distance from the center of cable end hole to the center of the "brass barrel" that pops into shift bracket. It should measure 5 7/8" - 6", closer to shorter is better. The prop must be locked in FWD. The "barrel" may or may not be "staked" (locked) in place. You have to the measurment adjust at this point. Vise grips that don't slip & a half inch wrench to turn the barrel.
In theory, what you are doing is centering the "clutch dog" between the fwd & rev gear. When you reconnect the remote cable do so without any effort. That barrel is NOT staked & spins free. Adjust it, while handle is still in fwd position. Just let it slide/fall into postion. Over the studs! You might have loose parts going on when taking apart so keep your eyes open.
Once you get these steps done, connect all fasteners like you were going to use it for the day. Put the lever back in nuetral & see what happens.
When you do shift, go into gear without hesitation. Assuming you aren't idling at 2000rpm. Just put it in gear, the shorter time the noise is there the better off you are!

Re: video: problem with shift adjustment

Thanks. i will get on this sometime this week. weather is not so good here.
with my boat i have to pull the lever straight out and move it forward. i give it 2-3 pumps then put it in neutral. it takes 2-3times to get it to start every time. sometimes it just wont so i will keep the lever out and push down and start the engine then it will start then i put it in neutral.
i am thinking are my fuel lines cloged or do i need to rebuld carb or clean carb. i have no idea how to clean the carb but i was going to get the spray can and just spray a bunch in there and see what that does.
